Understanding the Basics

Most washing machines in Japanese apartments are top-loading units with a built-in spin dryer (not a full tumble dryer). Water flows in from a hose connected to your sink or wall tap, and drains through a hose into the floor drain.

How to start a basic wash:

  1. Press 電源 (Dengen) to turn on the machine

Wash Courses / Cycles (コース)

Most machines offer several wash courses. Here are the most common:

Japanese Romaji English
標準 Hyōjun Standard / Normal
おまかせ Omakase Auto / Automatic
スピード Supīdo Speed Wash
念入り Nen'iri Heavy Duty / Deep Clean

Tip: For everyday laundry, 標準 (Hyōjun - Standard) or おまかせ (Omakase - Auto) are your safest choices.

Water Temperature Settings (水温)

Not all machines have temperature controls, but if yours does:

Japanese Romaji English
水 / 冷水 Mizu / Reimizu Cold Water
ぬるま湯 Nurumayu Warm Water
お湯 Oyu Hot Water
自動 Jidō Automatic

Most Japanese washing machines default to cold water, which is perfectly fine for regular laundry.

Water Level (水位)

You can adjust how much water the machine uses:

Japanese Romaji English
Taka High
Naka Medium
Tei Low
少し Sukoshi Extra Low
自動 Jidō Automatic

Tip: Select 自動 (Jidō - Automatic) and the machine will sense the load size for you.

Detergent and Softener Compartments

Open the lid and look for compartments at the back of the drum:

Japanese Romaji English
洗剤 Senzai Detergent
液体洗剤 Ekitai senzai Liquid Detergent
粉末洗剤 Funmatsu senzai Powder Detergent
柔軟剤 Jūnan-zai Fabric Softener
漂白剤 Hyōhaku-zai Bleach

Add detergent to the main compartment and fabric softener to the smaller one (usually marked with a flower icon or 柔軟剤). For pods, toss them directly into the drum.

Step-by-Step: Doing Your First Load of Laundry

Follow these simple steps:

  1. Sort your clothes by color and fabric type
  2. Open the lid and load your clothes loosely
  3. Add detergent to the appropriate compartment
  4. Add fabric softener if desired
  5. Close the lid
  6. Press 電源 (Dengen) to power on
  7. Select your course — 標準 (Standard) for everyday items
  8. Set water level — 自動 (Automatic) is recommended
  9. Press スタート (Start)
  10. Wait for the cycle to finish (typically 30–60 minutes)
  11. Hang your clothes to dry (most Japanese homes don't use tumble dryers)

Timer / Delay Start (予約)

Want your laundry ready when you wake up? Use the delay timer:

Japanese Romaji English

▲ / ▼ Adjust time up/down

How to use:

  1. Set your course and preferences
  2. Press 予約 (Yoyaku)

Common Error Messages

If something goes wrong, your machine may display an error code or message:

給水できません Kyūsui dekimasen Cannot fill water Check water tap/hose
排水できません Haisui dekimasen Cannot drain Check drain hose for clogs

To prevent little hands from changing settings:

Japanese Romaji English
チャイルドロック Chairuddo rokku Child Lock
チャイルド Chairuddo Child

To activate/deactivate: Usually, press and hold a combination of buttons for 3–5 seconds. Check your machine's manual for specifics.

Spin Dry Settings (脱水)

After washing, the machine spins at high speed to remove excess water:

Japanese Romaji English
Kyo Strong
標準 Hyōjun Standard
Jaku Weak/Gentle
脱水なし Dassui nashi No Spin

Tip: For delicate items, choose 弱 (Jaku - Weak) or 手洗い (Tearai - Hand Wash) course.

Drying Your Clothes (乾燥)

If your machine has a built-in dryer (many don't), you'll see:

Japanese Romaji English
乾燥 kansō Dry
全乾燥 Zen kansō Full Dry
少し乾燥 Sukoshi kansō Slight Dry
乾燥なし kansō nashi No Dry
送風 Sōfū Air Dry (no heat)

Important: Many Japanese apartments rely on indoor drying racks or balcony clotheslines. Hanging laundry outside is a common sight in Japan and is perfectly normal.

Garbage Filter / Lint Trap (ゴミ取り)

Regular maintenance keeps your machine running well:

Japanese Romaji English
ゴミ取り Gomi tori Lint trap / filter
ろ過 Roka Filtration

Final Tips for Laundry in Japan

  • Detergent: Purchase at supermarkets, drugstores, or 100-yen shops. Look for 洗剤 (senzai) on the label
  • Coin laundry (コインランドリー): If your apartment doesn't have a washer, coin laundries are everywhere and very affordable
  • Drying indoors: In humid seasons (梅雨/tsuyu), use a fan or dehumidifier to dry clothes faster
  • Trash your lint: Don't forget to clean the filter regularly!

Laundry in Japan doesn't have to be intimidating. With this guide saved on your phone, you'll be navigating those kanji buttons like a pro in no time.
